Secret wiretapping was one of the KGB’s tools used to control society. This function was carried out by the Operational Technical Department, which occupied most of the second floor of what is now the Museum premises.

Around 1959-1960, after dividing several larger rooms with partitions, six small rooms were set up for the staff of division No. 2, who conducted secret wiretapping on personal and official conversations. It is not known whether all of them were equipped with wiretapping devices. Some of the equipment had already been removed before the Museum took over the premises. This room displays the surviving wiretapping equipment and furniture, and some restored interior details from that time.
