Wolf Children: along the bread path from East Prussia to Lithuania. 1945-1948
Main Information
The virtual exhibition is meant to honour the memory of the “wolf children” – orphans who came to Lithuania from the territory of Soviet-occupied East Prussia in 1945–1948.
At the end of World War II, tens of thousands of orphaned children were left in devastated East Prussia. Thousands of them came to Lithuania, where they eventually began to be called “wolf children”. These children were victims of brutal Soviet terror and witnesses of horrendous Soviet crimes. When they were still very young, they came to Lithuania, found refuge and put down roots, which is why they deserve to have their voices tell these tragic life stories that are hard to even comprehend.
The virtual exhibition presents a historical overview of the events in East Prussia based on archival photographs and documents, stories of individuals who experienced the fate of “wolf children” illustrated by family photographs and documents, and maps of the children’s journey from devastated East Prussia to Lithuania and their wandering around different areas of Lithuania. Authentic testimonies of people who experienced the fate of “wolf children” have been recorded.
