The Museum’s task is to collect, preserve, study, and promote historical-documentary material reflecting the forms, methods, ways and extent of the physical and spiritual genocide suffered by the Lithuanian population from the Soviet occupation regime, and the methods and extent of resistance to the occupation regime, to preserve the memory of the victims of the Soviet genocide and the memory of freedom fighters.

The Museum’s collections currently comprise more than 144,000 exhibits. They are studied, digitised, and computerised. The material of the Museum’s collections can be used by both Lithuanian and foreign citizens conducting scientific research, preparing publications, papers, exhibitions, implementing cultural and educational activities related to the presentation of the history of the Lithuanian occupation.

Visitors to the Museum can take part in a guided tour of all the Museum’s exhibitions, choose a thematic tour and learn in more detail about the history of the former KGB internal prison, the nine-year partisan war or the imprisonment of the Lithuanian population in the forced labour camps and the history of the forced life in exile, or choose an audio guide and get acquainted with the Museum’s expositions independently.

The educational programme Open History, prepared by the Museum staff, offers educational sessions, excursions, and documentary film screenings for schoolchildren.
The Museum’s conference hall hosts themed evenings, exhibition presentations, and screenings of feature films and documentaries.

Travelling exhibitions prepared by the Museum staff are displayed not only in Lithuania but also in foreign countries.
