On 15 June 1940, Kudirkos Naumiestis, along with all of Lithuania, was occupied by the Soviet Union. Soviet government offices were set up in the city. On 22 June 1941, after the start of the war between Germany and the Soviet Union, the German border town of Kudirkos Naumiestis was occupied by the German army without any resistance. In July, the new occupants began building a prisoner-of-war camp for captured Soviet soldiers on the southern edge of the town, near the road to Lauckaimis. The virtual exhibition tells the story of the so-called “Oflag 60” prisoner-of-war camp that operated in Kudirkos Naumiestis during the Nazi occupation.
